With springtime just around the corner, we are looking forward to working with sandstone again as we head back into patio season. Outdoors we work with all sorts of stone including flagstones, York stone and even brick but working on sandstone always feels like uncovering a hidden beauty.
It might surprise you to learn that the word ‘sand’ actually refers to the size of the grains that make up the rock. This means that sandstone is made up of very tiny fragments of minerals such as quartz or other types of rock. As a sedimentary rock it also contains a cementing substance that acts like glue holding it all together.
What does this all mean for your garden though? One of the misunderstood things about sandstone is its colour. It is most commonly tan but can come in a range of different colours depending on where it originates such as yellow, white, brown, grey, pink and black. Some of the most beautiful patios that we have worked on will often have a mixture of different coloured sandstone to create a patchwork effect.
One sandstone job, I’m not sure I’d take my chances in on is a little rock you might have heard of in Australia. Good job no one has found a need for a natural stone restorer at Uluru!
