Whilst our stone cleaning service will remove surface dirt, it is often worth considering the additional benefits of a restoration service. Travertine polishing or resurfacing will not only restore the beauty of your floor but also ensure a longer-lasting finish.
When we resurface a stone floor in this way, a fresh layer of stone will be revealed. This means that not only will you have a clean floor, but the stone will have a look a lot closer to when it was first laid. Resurfacing in this way will remove surface scratches, dulling and etch marks on the surface of the stone. It will regain the colours and properties of that initial stone. This means that once sealed, it will retain its finish for a lot longer than a floor that has been simply cleaned.
This method of restoration is usually recommended for travertine floors that had the pits filled initially with epoxy resin. For travertine with a tumbled edge, the process is a little different and you can read about this on the travertine cleaning page. Your stone care technician will be able to determine the best recommended treatment when they visit to survey your floor.
Contact UsThe travertine polishing or resurfacing process begins with removing any stains, scratches and worn areas of the stone by gently removing the top layer of the stone surface using resin bonded diamonds. These are attached to a rotary machine with a weight of up to 160kg. The rotation and the pressure created will scratch the floor providing a light abrasion. Following this, the natural pits in your travertine floor are filled by hand with epoxy resin that is colour matched to the stone. This creates a smooth and homogenous finish akin to when the floor was initially installed.
The polishing process is all about creating tighter and tighter scratch patterns that reduce the size of the pores and capillaries in the stone, creating a natural shine. Your travertine floor can be resurfaced to a honed, mid or high shine depending on your preference.
For stone that is more deeply scratched, or shows uneven heights at the grout joint (lippage), we can offer deeper restoration services too and you can read more about this following the link below.
Travertine RestorationWe follow up with all of our clients around 1 year to 18 months after our initial visit, based on our professional opinion of when further work is likely to be necessary. We can also provide a price for maintenance immediately on request. However, we would still recommend re-visiting before commencing work to re-familiarise ourselves with your stone
