As longstanding stone care industry professionals we sometimes take for granted the words and technical terms used. So, we decided it was about time to help you to translate stone care and figure out how we might be able to help you.
Lippage
Poorly installed tiles can result in lippage. This is the term used to describe an uneven level at a grout joint. We usually notice this before a client does, as the machinery we use to restore stone will not be able to evenly to provide an even polish if some tiles are even slightly higher than others.
Some degree of lippage should always be expected even if you’ve invested in the highest quality craftsmen. However if the tiles are set too unevenly, it may be worth considering using our grinding services to rectify this. Not only will this improve the aesthetic of the area concerned but will prevent dirt from being caught on the exposed edge of the tile.
Pitting
This is commonly seen in travertine and can occur in all natural stone due to its porous nature. We are often asked by clients if we can fill the holes in their floor. This is actually part and parcel of our restoration services.
Pitting is the reason that we always recommend keeping moisture away from your floors as much as possible. By using a low-moisture mop system to clean your stone floor you can reduce the amount of sitting water.
Pits will increase in size over time, so it is advisable to have an expert restore these on a regular basis. By filling the pits and grinding and polishing your floor, we can restore it to a more even finish.
Ahead of Decorex 2024, we are exploring the hot topics of the show that so naturally throw stone into the limelight.
