The beauty of natural stone is that each piece is unique. This is what makes it so personal and so special. Our role is to ensure that your irreplaceable investment lasts forever. When Sarah-Louise from No.17 House approached us to refresh their treasured marble worktops and island, we were happy to assist.
Sarah-Louise and Christopher are the Founders of renowned travel and lifestyle Instagram The Adventures of Us and London creative agency Seventeen Social Club. When they renovated their Richmond property in 2022 they shared this journey with their Instagram followers.
Since then they have created No.17 House, a destination for creativity, a home and lifestyle store and online sourcebook. No.17 offers a unique collection of bespoke, design-led pieces to acquire for the home, as well as inspiration and guidance for home and interiors enthusiasts.
Choosing materials was an important part of the design journey for Sarah-Louise and Christopher. They wanted to have not only true beauty in their home, but longevity too. The bright kitchen space with high ceilings was made for a statement piece of marble and so the couple spent time considering and selecting the right piece. Supplied by Middlesex Marble, they installed a Borghini marble worktop and island.
They were always aware of the need for ongoing maintenance and careful cleaning. As a sensitive stone, marble will mark from contact with acidic liquids and this will usually show as a dull or white patch on the stone. Hardly visible to the eye, many clients choose to allow the stone to age gracefully as these marks occur. Sarah-Louise and Christopher, much like us appreciate the story that the marble tells as it develops a patina over time. A professional maintenance visit enables the stone to be resealed. This protection helps to prevent liquids penetrating over time and having a more permanent impact.
Managing Director Dave led on the project alongside Stone Care Assistant Will. After applying protection to the surrounding areas, they used specialist equipment to restore the stone. The initial phase to remove surface scratches and etch marks used diamond grinding technology. Finer abrasives were then used to refinish the worktop and island to a satin hone. To ensure an even finish across the surface, a specialist edge machine was used as well as two different machines with weights added. The final stage of the process was to add ac colour enhancing impregnating sealant.
Commenting on the experience, Sarah-Louise noted:
“For us, the natural ageing of the stone is all part of its journey and a sign of love and life in your kitchen, but restoring its natural beauty is also a lot easier than you may think.
This week, the incredible team at Athena Stonecare paid us a visit to help us restore our Borghini marble back to its original beauty, taking care to protect our kitchen and leaving our stone as beautiful as the day it was installed. They buffed out ring marks and lemon stains, polished the stone to a stunning honed finish, removed the brass patina and limescale from around our taps, refreshed the silicone and sealed the stone to protect against future spills. All of this in one morning, and no dust or damage to our kitchen. We are so impressed.”
