One of the phrases that we never tire of hearing is: you’ve made it look like new. We were once even told the floor looked better than when it was laid. I’m sure that memory plays a role in that.
However, some of the services that we provide really could make your stone look better than it did brand new.
One of the specialist restoration services that we offer clients is a hardening treatment. As part of our quoting process, we take readings to measure the density of the stone. Density is a measure of mass per volume. The average density of an object equals its total mass divided by its total volume. Our density scale measures from diamond through to chalk to gauge how dense your stone is.
If your limestone floor scores down the lower end of the scale, then we can apply a densifying solution. This will tighten up the pores of the stone, giving better clarity of shine. This also makes the floor less susceptible to dulling and soiling in the future.
We always work with our clients to help them to figure out the right level of shine for their stone surface. Highly polished might not always be suitable for a floor that could easily become slippery. This means that when we are making decisions about how to achieve the finish that you want, there is often a few tricks, or more specialist restoration services, that we can offer to help. For example, with terracotta and Victorian tiles we can use a high gloss wax to give the visual impact of a highly polished surface whilst keeping the floor safer to walk on.
The final stage in all restoration processes is the application of a sealant. Often this will take the form of a colour-enhancing sealant. These sealants are designed to protect against water and oil-based staining, as well as deepen and enrich the colour and texture of the stone. This brings the life back to stone damaged by UV bleaching as well as scratched and worn areas. Colour enhancing sealants can be used on almost all stone surfaces and have a particularly striking impact on black marble.
So with a little knowledge and some very specialist tools, we can help to make your floors looks as good as new this year – if not even better!
