When it comes to choosing the right natural stone flooring for your project there is lots to consider. We’ve asked some of the experts that we work with to share their top tips
AF Jones Stone Interiors is a leading stonemasonry company. They specialise in delivering high-end and luxury projects across the south of England and London. We asked Megan Jones, Commercial Manager to share her top tips for choosing Natural Stone Flooring:
“Stone is a natural material and will vary from tile to tile. Make sure your tiler/ fixer checks every single pallet of material before laying a floor. This will ensure the colour / natural variation is spread evenly across the floor to get the optimum effect.
The grout colour should be carefully selected to match the lightest colour in the stone. This will mean you will notice the colour variation and beauty of the fossil in the stone rather than the grout lines.”
And Megan’s favourite stone:
It’s got to be reclaimed Dalle de Bourgogne, an incredibly unique and beautiful stone from 18/19th Century. Portland Stone is also up there, it is timeless and classic!
Mark Thompson from Signature Stone specialises in helping Architects, Designers, Landscapers, Contractors and Homeowners throughout the process of selecting the best surface finishes for their project.
His best advice when it comes to choosing natural stone flooring:
“Don’t be scared to use stone! So many clients want to, but are put off having heard the ‘usual’ horror stories.
What I say to my clients is regardless of whether its stone, porcelain, or timber a floor will still need to be maintained.
And for those worried about slip risk, my response is always this – Paddington Station has limestone floors and a daily footfall of 100k people.”
And Mark’s favourite stone:
“Personally, I love the simple elegance of a Portland limestone floor.
And there’s something beautifully timeless about a Carrara & Nero Marquina chequerboard floor. It just works, regardless of whether it’s a centuries old chapel, or the Ivy!”
A heritage British brand, Artisans of Devizes prides itself on two things – the mastery of stone and tile craftsmanship and the joy of bringing them to homes, spaces and places near and far. Sally Cutchie, Brand Manager explains how their team support clients with choosing natural stone flooring.
“We advise our clients on the particular qualities of stone, advising on their suitability in different spaces. Natural stone will wear with you and your home and last a lifetime so it is really important that clients understand its make up and how to care for it. We also like to highlight how different finishes can enhance the look of the stone and add extra practicality. For example, our beautiful Buscot limestone in a tumbled finish works perfect in country home interiors while the tumbled and etched version improves the slip rating making it perfect for outdoor living.”
