Our client was looking to have her limestone floor rejuvenated and approached her cleaning company G Clean to see if they could help. Mick the Company Owner had been following our work on Instagram for a little while. Wanting to ensure that the client and her stone had the best possible treatment, he recommended that she contact Athena Stonecare for a restoration service rather than a deep clean.
When we attended for the initial visit, we provided a sample for two different treatment options. Our full restoration service involves grinding the stone flat to begin with. This removes lippage, surface level pin holes, scratches, etch marks and grout residues. This comprehensive initial stage provides an even surface for us to refinish to restore the stone back to its original condition, while also allowing specialist sealants to be applied throughout the process to penetrate deep into the tiles.
Although it is more labour intensive, it is recommended for stone that has not been professionally treated since installation or has significant surface damage. It is more costly, but ultimately provides longevity, by enabling easier maintenance and rectifying existing issues before they degrade to a point of being beyond repair.
Our client opted for this more involved treatment and the team attended over 3 days. At the end of the first day, we applied a deep penetrating sealant after the grinding phase which was left to cure overnight. This protects from moisture ingress as well as rising damp problems. After this we used copper-bonded diamonds to remove grinding scratch patterns and applied a limestone densifier to harden the stone, making it more user friendly in heavy traffic areas.
The final stage saw the stone refinished using resin-bonded diamonds to achieve a satin hone. The floor was then sealed with an impregnator for surface level stain-protection.
