As part of a refurbishment of their Mayfair Showroom, Bentley Jack Barclay were looking to restore the
terrazzo floor in the basement level. The enquiry had been received by one of our
fellow restoration specialists Stone Lab.
Like us, Stone Lab are a small, family run business offering expert stone care services. Being in a niche industry means that we often work with, and pass clients to, other companies. This usually occurs when we are unable to get to a client within the right time frame, or if a client is more local to one of our counterparts. The most important thing is that the job is done well and the stone is cared for properly. So we make sure that we know the best in the business and can point clients in the direction of a business that will offer quality.
With over 305m of floor to restore at Bentley, Stone Lab suggested that we collaborate to complete the project in a shorter time frame.
The initial briefing for the work to the terrazzo floor was to restore to a matt finish. However, both Lyndon (Stone Lab Managing Director) and Dave expressed concerns about leaving the stone with an open surface and the possibility of tyre marks being difficult to remove going forward.
Instead is was recommend to grind and tighten the surface of the stone, using resin diamond abrasives, followed by a powder polishing process. The aim was to create a uniformed polished finish that will make ongoing maintenance easier.
Over 6 days, we worked alongside Stone Lab to transform the floor in a multi-stage process. The initial preparation work saw large cracks in the floor filled with epoxy resin as well as hand cleaning of the edges of the floor where it met the walls and pillars.
Following this, the floors were firstly stripped of a thick layer of topical wax sealant using alkaline stripping agents and a heavy-duty carbide brush. Using Hyper Grinder Levighetor machines the terrazzo was then resurfaced using 120, 220, 400, 800 and 1600 grit resin diamond segments. Polishing powders were then used to crystalise and the floor for a high shine finish before a sealant was applied.
The Showroom Manager commented:
“I could not be happier with the finish to the iconic Jack Barclay Bentley checkerboard stone floor. Both the teams at Stonelab and Athena Stonecare have been the consummate professionals and refurbished this precious piece of history beyond our expectations.”
