A local client had appointed Ali Hearn Interiors for the renovation of their Buckinghamshire property. The limestone floor throughout the ground floor had seen better days. However, Lead Designer Caroline recognised the potential for it to become a key feature of the property. Having previously worked with Athena Stonecare, she engaged us during the planning stage of the project to see if there was anything that could be done to save the floor.
During the initial site visit we carried out some samples to reveal the depth and variety of colours hidden underneath years of wear and tear. The client was given options to either deep clean the stone or to have it fully restored. Although the cleaning would have lifted the dirt from the surface and given the floor a refreshed look, it would not have given the stone itself a new lease of life.
The full restoration system involves an initial grinding phase which serves to flatten the surface of the stone. This removes lippage, ingrained discolouration and scratches. During the process a densifying compound is added to the limestone. This penetrates deep into the stone and helps to make it less susceptible to water damage. Consolidating the stone in this way makes it easier to maintain so that the finish on the stone endures.
We attended the property over five days, working room by room in small areas to minimise disruption. We liaised with the homeowner to determine the exact finish for the stone to create a soft sheen across the floor. The work required 7 stages of diamond restoration using both our largest machine the Titan alongside a handheld tool to ensure an even finish to the edges.
