There’s just a few simple steps to follow when it comes to how to clean a marble floor. If you look after your marble as soon as it is installed, then it will last forever.
One of the best things that you can do for your marble is to regularly sweep it. Dust and dirt can easily it’s way into a home on the bottom of shoes. Even a bag popped down on the floor could be carrying particles picked up throughout the day. Being a soft stone, means that marble can scratch easily. Usually these are only very fine micro-scratches but over time this is what will cause the floor to look dull.
We recommend sweeping the floor daily using a soft, long-hair Swiffer. This will effortlessly attract even the smallest particles. It is much quicker than vacuuming and kinder to your stone too. We recommend avoiding a vacuum cleaner altogether. Often the wheels and the head can carry grit and dust from one area of the house to another. Causing more scratch hazards than they resolve!
When it comes to mopping a marble floor, it is important to use only a pH neutral cleaner. This should not be confused with eco-friendly or ‘green’. Just because a product has passed it’s B Corp certification doesn’t mean that it can’t harm your stone. Marble is acid sensitive meaning that when anything acidic comes into contact with the stone it will cause an etch mark. This usually show as a dull or white patch. It is only a surface-level mark but it cannot be wiped away and will require professional restoration.
The product that we recommend is called Fila Cleaner Pro and this is a very effective pH neutral product that can be used on any surface in your home. If in doubt, check the label of the products that you are using and make sure that they safe ‘stone safe’ or pH neutral.
It is important to try and clean up spills on your marble floor as quickly as possible. Being a porous stone means that if you leave liquid sitting on the surface for too long then it could start to penetrate and create lasting damage. The impregnator applied to your stone during installation and after any subsequent restoration treatments should help to prevent this. However, the better you are at making sure you address a spill as soon as possible the better.
Try to remember to blot spills rather than wiping them. This is particularly important if something acidic has been dropped onto the stone. The wiping will spread the damage further and create a larger area that might need a professional treatment.
The simplest things that you can do to look after your marble involves no cleaning at all. Prevention is always the first step. We advise clients to install good quality matting at each entrance to their property to trap dust and dirt. It is important to remember to clean these mats regularly too. You may also consider having a ‘shoes off’ policy to help ensure that nothing is walked across your floor that might scratch it. Felt pads on the base of furniture are a must too!
