16 years after it was installed our client decided to revive the marble in her bathroom. Whilst carrying out several other renovation works, it seemed like an opportune moment to return the marble back to it’s former glory.
The stone was showing signs of acid damage that we refer to as etch marks. This is usually caused when any acidic liquid comes into contact with the stone surface. It reacts with the calcium carbonate in the stone and creates a dull or a white patch. This cannot be wiped away and will need a professional to restore.
In a bathroom, this sort of mark is often exacerbated by a build up of limescale. With most people living in a hard water area, the pH of the tap water is not neutral. If not wiped up, sitting water can cause build ups of limescale deposits on the stone. Many of the products sold in supermarkets to tackle limescale are highly acidic. This can create the perfect storm for your stone. To avoid this, we have created a blog dedicated to caring for marble in a bathroom.
Luckily any damage that is caused from acids, water or limescale in a bathroom is usually restorable. On this occasion we used handheld diamond abrasives grind the surface of the stone to remove the limescale and etch marks. We then deep cleaned the tiles and grout lines. The stone was refinished to a satin shine and impregnated for protection.

Really happy, both with the quality of the worktop finish (ring marks, be gone!) and with the Athena Stonecare experience overall. Am sure we'll be using them again.

Dave and his team did such a brilliant job restoring our limestone bathroom floors which someone used bleach on by accident. We thought they were ruined but Athena made them look like new again! I would highly recommend them and we will definitely use them for future cleaning and maintenance. Thank you Athena!
