Each year we visit the Crown and Anchor in Ham, Wiltshire to provide a deep clean of their limestone floor.
It is a busy countryside setting and the limestone selected is a hard wearing type which is perfect for this setting. After it was installed by Ca’ Pietra in 2020 they recommended that they seek our advice on an ongoing maintenance programme. Being a small space, means that traffic is high in certain areas and the British weather means that dirty water is easily carried into the pub. In a domestic setting, we advise taking shoes off but this is impossible in a public space. It means that over time the stone can become saturated, the sealant wears away and it just won’t clean up again without a professional refresh. If left to continue to degrade, this can cause lasting damage to the stone.
Each year, we attend in the Spring once the ‘muddy boot’ season is finished. The process that we carry out includes a deep clean of the floor tiles and grout lines using alkaline cleaning compounds and mild abrasive powder. As a naturally pitted stone, this enables us to get deep into every pocket that dirt has collected. The light resurfacing also gently abrases the limestone and reveals a fresh layer of stone that not only looks like it did when it was first installed but also maintains the properties of the stone.
Following the cleaning process we apply an impregnator that penetrates and protects the stone from within. This is essential as being a porous stone type, it is important to stop any liquids from saturating the stone and causing lasting damage. We also apply a surface wax as an extra layer of protection.
In between our visits, the team can keep the limestone clean by simply sweeping and mopping each day. For most domestic clients, we usually wouldn’t need to visit again for at 2 years or more.

Dave and his team did such a brilliant job restoring our limestone bathroom floors which someone used bleach on by accident. We thought they were ruined but Athena made them look like new again!
